Fishy Lunch in Prague
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC. Czech Republic is a haven for meat lovers but for those who prefer seafood, I am sorry to burst your bubble but it is a rarity to find fresh ones here. For one, the country is landlocked, which means you just could not get fresh off-the-boat catch on a whim unlike its neighbouring EU countries that reside on the west. The seafood had to be transported at a long distance before Czechs can even enjoy it.
That's why when we found Blue Fjord while we were roaming around Prague, we were overjoyed. It is quite a coincidence that we came upon this restaurant that offers a great variety of seafood. We just wanted to see the naked woman in stainless steel made by Cerny which was the reason why we were in this part of the city. The snow was falling non-stop then and the cold was already piercing through our skin; our skin that is more used to a tropical climate and the occasional taste of a much lower temperature brought about by our air-conditioned offices and houses so unlike that of the winter season.
It was lunch time already when we came across this street. Already gritting our teeth through the negative temp, our extremities numbing from the cold and we, on the verge of getting quite dizzy already from hunger, we just wanted to take refuge somewhere. Just when we thought that we were already reaching our limits, we then found unexpectedly this restaurant that boasts of an exciting array of some great catch.
Since we had been eating meat for the past few days already, our palate was looking then for something to balance out the fullness we were feeling from all the meat we had consumed. Our appetite even grew bigger the moment we approached the counter and saw how luscious-looking the seafoods are. It was a magnificent sight especially since it was snowing hard outside and how a mind can most of the time associate seafoods with images of the beach, picnics and the tropics!
While the men in our lives order on our behalf, me and my mom on the other hand could not help but adore the powder blue color of the wall on this part of the restaurant/shop. It just reminded me a lot of the sky which I haven't seen in that hue for almost a week already.
A chalkboard menu displayed the specialties of the day. Written in words that looked so posh but were unpronounceable by us, we required some help from the guy on the cashier to spell each item out. Here are what we got:
Sendvič s uz. Lososem (CZK 109). Smoked Salmon Sandwich
Fish 'n' Chips (CZK 185)
Grilled Chobotnice (CZK 315). Grilled Octopus
Grilled Steak Z Lososa (CZK 150). Grilled Salmon
All of them looked extra delicious! But more than the look, the taste of the dishes is beyond exceptional. The seafoods were fresh and the serving sizes were bigger than expected! My mom and brother got some Fish n' Chips but when they saw how overwhelming their serving size was, they immediately regretted their decision of getting an order each! It was hands-down good for 2 to 3 persons.
The Grilled Chobotnice (Octopus) was the winner for me! It was so soft; more like the melt-in-your-mouth kind of soft actually. It was my first time to eat an octopus-based dish, except for the Takoyaki balls I sometimes eat in Little Tokyo back in Manila that have octopus bits in the mix, so I was ecstatic to finally experience eating one and seeing its tentacles intact.
Moreover, the prices were very competitive we thought that it was really quite a steal to eat there. So if ever you are looking for some affordable, fresh and yummy seafoods while you are in Prague, this restaurant is my most recommended!
