Uyghur Cuisine in Munich

Uyghur Cuisine in Munich

MUNICH, GERMANY. I have no idea what Uyghur cuisine was so when we found Taklamakan restaurant near the Hauptbahnhof and in the middle of the Bahnhofsviertel bearing a text above the store name referring to an unfamiliar cuisine, we got so curious we immediately barged inside the restaurant without thinking twice. Uyghur cuisine which is also called Xinjiang cuisine is found throughout China. It is mostly characterized by mutton, beef, camel, chicken goose with lots of tomatoes, onions, peppers, eggplant and various dairy foods as what the menu and the food displays also gave away.

The menu was overwhelming for us Uyghur cuisine rookies, so to somehow stay on the safe side and to avoid some miscommunication with the servers on the other side, we settled with the dishes that could be seen through the showcase so we can just point at whatever it is that we want to order. We got the beef (because who can go wrong with beef, really), mutton, big lamb chops (which I absolutely dream everyday!) and a huge chicken thigh, all with a mountain of rice as their side dishes. Moreover, since this is a joint venture between an Uyghur woman and her Turkish business partner, they also offer Turkish dishes that Mediterranean food lovers might love.

As you can see, the serving size was beyond my wildest imagination. If we only knew we will be getting this much per plate, we should have just ordered 3 for our troop of 5. As for the unknown cuisine, I was surprised I liked it. Not as much as the other cuisines that I love but much that I would eat it again. The taste has a right balance to it, not overpowering and not too bland either; just enough to have you crave and not tire your taste buds. And of course, it was a nice break also from the unending German food that somehow begun tasting the same as the days wore on!
